Ranty Friday – Nail Polish
I’ve been meaning to write this post for ages and reading Mummy Barrow’s Ranty Friday post today has prompted me to do so, my apologies for the similar content!
We are pretty lucky at work in that quite often product samples come in from make up/beauty companies and you can try them out, included in this are always the latest nail colours. When they are being dished out a selection of my colleagues will flock around like magpies and coo over their spoils.
On one such occasion there was a discussion around colour with something said along the lines of “oh no I couldn’t possibly wear that one, it wouldn’t suit me at all, not with my skin tone” to which I couldn’t help myself to not reply with
“What are you talking about? You pick a colour to match an outfit, accessorise with or just because you like it! Nobody looks at another persons nails and questions whether it complements the skin tone!”
To which someone replied “it’s ok for you Clare, you don’t care what you look like!”
How fucking rude! It’s not a case of not caring what I look like, the fact is it doesn’t matter what I look like! I don’t care what you think about how I look because you are not the tiniest bit important in my life.
I should not be judged on what I choose to wear or whether or not I have make up on my face. As long as I am clean, my clothes are clean and my hair and teeth are brushed then nobody has any right to judge or look down on me.
These crazy social “rules” about what you should wear, how you should wear it and for crying out loud what colour nails you have are ridiculous and needless pressure on those that try to conform and want to fit in. It is just as bad -although obviously less important- as the media showing stick thin models to have the bodies we should all strive for, or discussing what pregnant celebrities should do to get back in their skinny jeans 10 days after giving birth.
Just be you and be nice with it, surely that’s what is important? What’s the point in being immaculately turned out if you are a bitch, what does that prove?
I care what the people that matter to me think. Thankfully none of them are shallow.
