Poker playing celebrities

When you play a game of online poker, you never know who you might be sharing the game with you. It could be a poker pro who has years of experience, a beginner who’s never played poker before and it may just be that you’re deciding to bet or raise against a celebrity.

When players click for online casino games the choice of username can ensure complete anonymity but rumour has it that there are plenty of celebrities who enjoy playing poker online. Some celebs have taken part in live poker tournaments on a semi-regular basis, and a few have proved that they’re pretty skilled at it too. Take Ben Affleck, for example. The actor / director whose latest film Argo swept the boards in the 2012 Oscars first made his name in the poker world when he won the California State Poker Championship in 2004. He is also a regular participant in the World Series of Poker annual tournaments. We’re guessing he puts in a fair amount of practice online too.

Other actors have shown their skills at the poker table include Tobey Maguire, star of the Spiderman movies, who is said to have won over $10m playing poker, and American Pie actress Shannon Elizabeth who once joked that poker is her back-up career should her acting career take a tumble.

Some famous sportsmen are also supposedly keen online poker players. Although Michael Phelps has 14 Olympic gold medals for swimming, apparently he’s pretty good at playing poker too – perhaps he uses the game as a way to unwind after all that swim training. And then of course there are the celebs who endorse poker sites, like former Aussie cricketer Shane Warne.

As well as stars who play poker, there are quite a few poker players who have become stars because of their playing. One of the most well-known female poker players is Erica Schoenberg. Erica was a fashion model and professional volleyball player before she started playing blackjack in 2004. Her skills at blackjack led to her being nicknamed the Blackjack Babe and she took part in the World Series of Blackjack in 2005 and was on the CBS Ultimate Blackjack Tour in 2006. She then started playing Texas Hold’em and quickly became known as the Poker Babe, finishing 16th in the World Poker Tour $25,000 season 4 in 2006. And in 2007 she came third in the World Series of Poker $1500 No Limit hold’em. Erica is also married to fellow poker pro Erick Lindgren.

It’s only logical that all these poker celebrities will be putting in some practice hours online. So next time you go onto your favourite poker site, you never know who is going to be playing alongside you, especially when you start playing at some of the bigger games. It may be that you’re rubbing shoulders with a Hollywood star, an Olympian athlete or a real poker pro!
