I year ago we heard the sad news that Jayne Walker had passed away after a short illness. She bravely battled her cancer to the end. At just 28 she left behind 2 young children, her husband and her loving family.

We were not close friends, but she worked at the nursery where J has been looked after since he was 6 months old, and so in some way has had an influence on his early years. She was a lovely, kind and very bubbly person and has been very much missed by the girls at nursery.

Her family and friends have spent the last 12 months doing all they can to ensure that other families do not face such tragedy. They have been fundraising in her memory for our local cancer charity The Big C who amongst many other things provide equipment and nurses in our hospitals. The Jayne Walker Lavender Fund have raised several thousand pounds so far by running the London Marathon, bike rides, skydives and yesterday held a Golf day and Summer Ball.

We were thrilled and honoured to have been invited to play in the event, and it was wonderful to see it so well supported. The weather wasn’t perfect but the atmosphere was. Knowing that the children at nursery we setting of balloons at the same time we were was a lovely moment too.

The most surreal part of the day was playing golf whilst listening to a rendition of ‘Time of my life’ and then later ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ as there was an event on at the neighbouring showground. I loved it though and could totally imagine Jayne having a good laugh about it!

Sadly we couldn’t stay into the evening for the ball, but as we left people we arriving and they all looked amazing. The effort that had gone into the day and making it all perfect was phenomenal. It is clear from everyone I spoke to just how many people’s lives she had touched.

Jayne, your family have done you proud. Rest in peace x
